The Journey Thus Far

with Leigh-Jane and Progressive Woman in Golf

It was in 2015 that I met Malethola Matube, founder member of Progressive Women In Golf at The Bryanston Country Club.  Male and I shared our passion for Golf and it was then that I agreed that we would assist in providing the golf ‘platform’ for a group of young girls and so, the Golf Girl Child Personal Mastery Development Program at The Bryanston Country Club and Golf Academy was born.

Male suggested that we take the Walter Sisulu Primary, in Olievenhoutsbosch, on board.  I requested that the sports coordinator of the school selected 16 girls that he felt had some potential and we had an hour’s introduction to Golf at the Academy.  The coaching team showed them the basic set up and swing and from there we chose the most promising 8 girls who were all in Grade 3.  To date, we have only had 2 changes to the group due to the children leaving the school.  The Bryanston Country Club generously Assist in transporting the girls for their hours lesson at the Academy every Thursday morning.  The girls have gone from strength to strength not only from a golf perspective but from a personal development standpoint as well.  It has been such a wonderful experience for us all, tThe girls have matured and grown exponentially, and we are so super proud of them.

In the 4 years that the girls have been a part of the program they have had the most wonderful exposure and experiences.  To name a few:

To date, The Bryanston Country Club and Golf Academy is still the only golf course that continues to fully, consistently and sustainably enable Progressive Women In Golf to shape the Girl Child from humble beginnings for EXCELLENCE.  On the 23rd of June 2019, the girls will play 9 holes at the back of the member’s Mixed Open at Bryanston CC and will attend the prize giving where the girls will be acknowledged for their growth and the members and staff will be thanked for their wonderful participation and support in the girls journey this far.

I would like to make special mention to the PGA coaches, Julie Bruyns and Sean Coomer at the Bryanston Golf Academy for their involvement and sacrificing their time freely to help us make this initiative the success it is.

I am very excited about the girl’s future and we are committed to supporting them and Progressive Woman in Golf for years to come!
